Dokdo brings to the fore the role of memory in shaping national identity. It has been said that we are the product of our past. This is aptly exemplified by the diplomatic wrangle over Dokdo. Japan’s prickly relationship with South Korea dating back from the period of Japan’s colonial rule is indelibly etched in the minds of South Koreans who feel emasculated and abused by Japan’s misrule. Dokdo’s narrative makes me feel like visiting the island of Dokdo.
